Labradoodle Coat Types

There are 3 potential coat types for the  labradoodle breed.

The Wool, The Fleece and The Hair

The Wool Coat

Wool coats, named for the obvious similarities to lamb's wool in texture, are ideally not as tightly curled like their poodle ancestry carries. Rather they should be spiralling curls, which open up easily to the skin & the curls are not tightly bound together.

Fleece coats have a soft silky texture as in the Angora goat can range between straight beautiful waves in the fur to soft spiralling curls. They are by far the easiest coats to manage.

The Hair Coat

Most hair coats will shed in varying degrees typical of their Labrador cousins and can be shorter or wiry in texture. It is usually seen in early generation dogs such as the first cross of a lab and poodle, F1b, and F2b Labradoodles, but can also pop up as a throw back in multi-gens. These are generally not a allergy-friendly coat .

Labradoodle Coat Myths

"Non-shedding" Coats

Lets be frank, all dogs shed their coats! Like all creatures with fur or hair (including humans) it is a critical function in the bodies maintenance. Labradoodles are often marketed as hypoallergenic dogs with non-shedding coats. However, this is a common myth.

While it is true that labradoodles are allergy-friendly, they do shed. The amount of shedding can vary depending on the individual dog and their coat type. It's important for potential labradoodle owners to understand this before bringing one into their home.

Labradoodles are still considered hypoallergenic, due to them not dropping hair constantly and their fur holding onto less irritants as dirt & dust tends to just fall off their coats. They can be easily maintained with regular brushing and general maintenance which will remove any fur retained in their coats.

Keep in mind that labradoodles that have hair coats may drop a lot more hair or be more irritant then those with a wool or fleece coat. This isn't always the case but is something to note.
